Heavy, irregular or painful periods can interfere with everyday life. Changes in bleeding patterns, bleeding between periods or periods that have stopped without an expected explanation can also be reasons to seek advice. A consultation helps assess the pattern and decide what further investigation or care may be appropriate.
Describe what has changed
Tell the clinician when the changes began, how they differ from your usual cycle and what impact they have. You do not need a perfect tracking record before booking. Approximate dates and practical examples are helpful.
Assessment may include a medical history, examination with consent and tests where indicated. The plan depends on your age, symptoms, medicines, pregnancy possibility and other health factors; it is not identical for every patient.
Prepare for your visit
- Note bleeding dates, pain and the effect on daily activities.
- Mention tiredness, feeling faint or any other symptoms.
- Bring contraception details and a current medicine list.
- Bring previous scan or blood-test reports if available.
- Explain whether you are hoping to become pregnant.
Discuss treatment and follow-up
Ask what the suspected cause is, whether any results are still needed and what the options are. Your preferences and pregnancy plans may influence the recommendation. Confirm when to return if symptoms continue and how any test results will be communicated.
Very heavy bleeding with faintness, severe pain or feeling seriously unwell needs urgent assessment. Bleeding after menopause should also be checked promptly. Explore our other gynaecology services for related care.
