Menopause and perimenopause can affect people differently. A consultation provides time to discuss changes in your periods, symptoms and daily wellbeing, and to consider which options fit your health history and preferences.
You do not need to decide on treatment before seeking advice. Tell the clinician what is most difficult for you and what you would like to improve.
A personal assessment
The discussion may cover symptoms, medicines, past treatment, family history and contraception needs. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms, so assessment may include considering alternative explanations or tests where indicated. Not everyone needs the same investigations.
Treatment discussions may include hormone replacement therapy, non-hormonal options and practical changes to support wellbeing. The benefits and risks should be considered for you individually. No single treatment is guaranteed to resolve every symptom.
What to bring
- Approximate period dates and changes in bleeding.
- A short description of symptoms and their impact on sleep, work or relationships.
- Medicines and supplements, including non-prescription products.
- Previous results and questions about options or side effects.
Follow-up matters
If treatment is recommended, ask how its effect will be assessed, when to return and what should prompt earlier advice. Do not alter prescribed treatment based only on general information online. Bleeding after menopause requires medical assessment.
