Your First Pregnancy Appointment: What to Bring

After a positive pregnancy test, contact a healthcare professional to arrange antenatal care. At your first appointment, the aim is to understand your health, discuss the pregnancy and agree on the next steps. The timing and investigations are tailored to your circumstances.

When booking with Dr Timmal’s practice, explain that this is a pregnancy appointment and mention any urgent symptoms. Routine appointments are available at Isipingo Hospital and St Augustine’s Hospital; reception can confirm the location and booking details.

Bring information you already have

  • The first day of your last period, if known, and the date of your positive test.
  • A list of medicines, supplements and allergies.
  • Information about previous pregnancies, births or pregnancy losses.
  • Relevant medical records, previous surgery details and recent results.
  • Your questions about care, costs and practical arrangements.

If your cycles are irregular or you cannot remember a date, say so. An approximate history is more useful than inventing an exact date. You can bring notes to help you remember sensitive or complicated details.

Discuss medicines and existing conditions

Tell the clinician about long-term conditions and all medicines you use, including products bought without a prescription. Ask which should be reviewed and what advice applies to supplements. Do not stop an essential prescribed medicine abruptly because you have discovered that you are pregnant; seek individual advice.

Ask how your history may affect the care plan and whether another healthcare professional needs to be involved. This is also a good time to explain any support needs or previous difficult experiences with care.

Understand the next appointment and results process

Ask which tests or scans are recommended, their purpose and how you will receive results. Confirm the follow-up plan and who to contact between visits. Screening and appointment schedules described on overseas websites may differ from the plan recommended locally.

Pregnancy with severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting or other worrying symptoms needs urgent assessment, not a routine booking form.
